Given a track record littered by misfired oddities like the Bee Gees starring in the 1978 movie version of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, successfully transforming The Beatles’ epochal oeuvre into film musicals has been an elusive alchemy. Yet director Julie Taymor’s 1968-centered, socio-political romance is more than just a stunning visual achievement. Its soundtrack brings a crucially intimate, emotionally engaging sensibility to its rich catalog of Beatles source material. Using an approach she rightly dubbed “organic,” Taymor never gets too ambitious with the original arrangements, balancing the plaintive, often stark performances of central young stars Jim Sturgess and Evan Rachel Wood with equally compelling turns by supporting players Carol Woods and Joe Anderson. The stars successfully evoke early Beatlemania via the energetic charms of Sturgess’ “All My Loving” and Wood’s “It Won’t Be Long,” then get straight to the canon’s often melancholy heart on his take of “In My Life,” and her gentle cover of “Blackbird.” Taymor’s use of star turns–the entire point of too many Beatles-rooted projects–is as sparing as it is deft. Eddie Izzard’s effusive “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite” is the product of several edited improvisations, while U2′s Bono and Edge re-imagine “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” by way of Pink Floyd. Joe Cocker’s swamp-dirge “Come Together” shows why he’s long been one of the best interpreters of the Lennon-McCartney catalog, and Dana Fuchs alternately evokes the heavenly and hellish via her tender “Dear Prudence,” as well as her manic, Joplin-channeling burn through “Helter Skelter.” Elsewhere on the CD, Bono teams with Secret Machine for the straightforward “I Am the Walrus,” while the Dallas indie rockers also take dream-pop turns on the instrumental “Flying” and George Harrison’s haunting “Blue Jay Way.” Remarkably, Taymor claims the bulk of the performances here were not lip-synced, but recorded live as the cameras rolled.–Jerry McCulley

Curb Your Enthusiasm – The Complete First Season
He’s got it all, a loving wife, good friends, a successful career, a good home… What could go wrong for Larry David? CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM stars “Seinfeld” co-creator Larry David as himself in an unsparing, cinema verite depiction of his life. Featuring real life celebrities playing themselves, the episodes are improvised by the actors from storylines by David.
Like its fellow HBO series Sex and the City, this half-hour comedy broke some TV rules and went from critics’ darling to an award-winning series in three years. Curb Your Enthusiasm is the brainchild of star-creator Larry David who co-created Seinfeld and was the basis for the easily rattled George Costanza (who was played by Jason Alexander). Like George, David has a tendency to speak too much, blow things out of proportion, and, most often, fail in the end (and often liking it that way). David’s new show is also like its predecessor: it’s about “nothing” except following the day-to-day ramblings of a sometime writer and comic (this time in L.A.). Eternal questions stemming from universal daily dilemmas are honed to perfect comedic absurdity. A notable exception is the show is only scripted by plot; much of the action is improvised. The first season starts with a one-hour mockumentary following David’s return to stand-up for the first time in years; the other 10 episodes follow a more traditional sit-com setup.
David plays “himself” (as does his friend, Richard Lewis) although his manager and wife are played by comedians Jeff Garlin and Cheryl Hines. Although this first season is a comedic gem, one can’t take more than an episode or two at a time–it’s acidic, biting comedy. The episodes are often built like a house of cards, which the irritable David will surely collapse by the end. Like another caustic TV character, Dabney Colman’s Buffalo Bill (1983-84), Larry David is not for everybody. –Doug Thomas

Sara Evans Greatest Hits
Sara evans is one america’s major stars on the country music scene. After 5 albums it’s time for a greatest hits! All the favourites are there plus 4 new tracks. The first single “as if” is at radio now.
Growing up in her family band in Missouri, Sara Evans learned two valuable lessons: always imbue a song with palpable emotion, and quickly change directions if a number tends to flop. Both rules have kept Evans in the big leagues the last 10 years. If she’s moved more squarely into the mainstream during this time, her adenoidal delivery and “Show Me State”-twang keeps her down on the farm, and she has not forgotten where she came from, as the irresistible hoedown head-bobber “Suds in the Bucket” proves. Evans has a tendency to wear rose-colored glasses when looking to the romantic horizon (“No Place That Far”), but it works in her favor on “As If,” a bouncy, rockin’ hormone rush in the advent of new love. The first of four new songs, “As If” is a perfect “starting over” tune in the wake of her messy 2006 divorce. “Love You With All My Heart” and “Pray for You” echo the new-beginnings theme. If “Some Things Never Change” seems a tired nod to routine family values, Evans apparently remembers a third lesson from her family-band days: Playing it safe will never get you kicked off the stage. –Alanna Nash

Paint Your Wagon
Prospectors share a wife and a scheme to collect gold dust lost in a california boomtown. Studio: Paramount Home Video Release Date: 04/11/2006 Starring: Lee Marvin Jean Seberg Run time: 166 minutes Rating: Pg13 Director: Joshua Logan
This film and Hello Dolly were the knockout blows to the studio movie musical, but Paint doesn’t deserve its tarnished name. Ben Rumson (Lee Marvin) takes the model of a rakish derelict to an unequaled high as a prospector who teams up with a greenhorn named Pardner (Clint Eastwood), and they both end up marrying the same scorned woman (Jean Seberg). No-Name City, the prospecting town they found, is Sodom and Gomorrah without the camels, and a vision of humanity left to its own devices. The songs are mostly wonderful melodies from Lerner and Loewe, with definite high points, notably “They Call the Wind Maria” and “Wand’rin’ Star.” Clint Eastwood always gets flack for his versions of “I Still See Elisa” and “I Talk to the Trees,” but that scorn is equally undeserved. Perhaps Paint‘s biggest sin, in retrospect, was trying to combine the aesthetics of the musical with the aesthetics of the male protagonists’ world-weary machismo. Not the easiest task, but Paint pulls it off. –Keith Simanton

Fast Times at Ridgemont High (Widescreen Special Edition)
A story of a group of california teenagers who enjoy malls sex and rock n roll. Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 05/22/2007 Starring: Sean Penn Eric Stoltz Run time: 90 minutes Rating: R
Before he became an overrated filmmaker, Cameron Crowe (Jerry Maguire) was a reporter for Rolling Stone who was so youthful looking that he could go undercover for a year at a California high school and write a book about it. He wrote the script for this film, based on that book, and it launched the careers of several young actors, including Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judge Reinhold, Phoebe Cates, and, above all, Sean Penn. The story line is episodic, dealing with the lives of iconic teen types: one of the school’s cool kids, a nerd, a teen queen, and, most enjoyably, the class stoner (Penn), who finds himself at odds with a strict history teacher (a wonderfully spiky Ray Walston). This is not a great movie but very entertaining and, for a certain age group, a seminal movie experience. –Marshall Fine Before he became an overrated filmmaker, Cameron Crowe (Jerry Maguire) was a reporter for Rolling Stone who was so youthful looking that he could go undercover for a year at a California high school and write a book about it.
